Jeff's First Helicopter Lesson

Monday 25-October-2004

I've always wanted to fly a helicopter, and always wondered whether I'd be able to or not. More specifically, I wondered whether I'd be able to hover. Well, now I know.

I booked a trial flight at Heli-Flight NZ up at Ardmore Aerodrome today and the main goal was to try my hand at hovering : the hardest skill to master when learning to fly a helicopter, short of autorotation landings.

Now, I don't want to brag or anything (!), but my instructor Rob said I was natural and I should definitely pursue a career as a helicopter pilot. I performed a stable hover using all three primary flight controls on my first attempt. Rob had never seen anyone do that before ! Most people spend ages mastering just one control ! It was so awesome, like you wouldn't believe.

Anyway, below are a few pictures from first time around.
